Steve Zivich

Steve Zivich completed his undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Music at the James Madison University in Virginia. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, completed a Surgical Internship at Boston Medical Center and Residency in Family Medicine in 2015 at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completion of his training, Steve returned to Boston to work at Community Health Center.

The most rewarding part of being a physician is making a positive difference in my patients’ lives. I always enjoyed the time I spend with my patients, but I found that the barriers and restrictions placed by insurance companies was preventing me being the doctor I sought out to be.

Steve was ecstatic to find a new style of medical practice called Direct Primary Care (DPC) that would allow him to focus on the doctor-patient relationship. DPC allows for quality time with his patients, without having to rush through visits or adjust necessary medical therapies based simply on what insurance dictated. This allows Steve to keep the focus on where health care belongs: on you, the patient.

Steve’s areas of special interest include preventative health and management of chronic illnesses, including HIV; metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity; sports-related injuries; and caring for patients in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender communities.

Steve is excited to be a part of the lives of the patients of Boston Direct Health, and to finally be able to be the family doctor that he have always wanted to be and that you deserve.

Brian Barkwell

Physical therapists diagnose, manage, and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system including rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery. Physical therapists are trained in the treatment of post-operative orthopedic procedures, fractures, acute sports injuries, arthritis, sprains, strains, back and neck pain, and spinal conditions. Joint and spine mobilization/manipulation, therapeutic exercise, and neuromuscular re-education are modalities often used to expedite recovery in the orthopedic setting. Those who have suffered injury or disease affecting the muscles, bones, ligaments, or tendons of the body will benefit from assessment by a physical therapist.

Brian Barkwell, MSPT, with a Masters in Physical Therapy degree from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, provides one-on-one injury rehabilitation that stands apart from the “factory” feel of many outpatient clinics.  With 14 years experience providing services to 900+ Bostonians out of a gym and private training studio in the South End, Brian’s approach combines therapeutic exercise to teach you how to recover from injury, along with a healthy dose of manual therapy to relieve pain.  If you have one of the insurances listed below, you can call the member services number on the back of your membership card to find out your “in-network outpatient physical therapy benefit”.

My Philosophy
I believe that each person has the wisdom to find ultimate health, vitality, energy and balance. As a health coach, I am here to help you take the necessary steps to uncover that wisdom within and use it to create the life you desire! I believe that food, health, and life should be savored! When we give ourselves permission to slow down and look at how our food, our exercise, and our choices influence our body, we experience so much! Health coaching is the chance to go on a brilliant journey. A journey where you and I, together, discover how to fuel, nourish and respect your body, mind and spirit.

My Approach
My goal is to help you define what healthy means in your life because you are unique! Your needs are specific to YOU and you alone. In order to meet those needs, you deserve a personalized coaching program that is catered to only you. We will explore what foods, exercise, and lifestyle choices heal and energize your body. I will guide you in making gradual, lifelong changes that build upon your strengths and help make every goal a reality!

A Holistic Mind
I practice holistic health coaching. This means that I look not only at food but at the large pieces of your life that influence your body and mind, and how we can establish a connection amongst it all. We will incorporate what are called primary foods, the many facets of your life that contribute to health and vitality including physical activity, relationships, career and spirituality, to provide you true balance within.

An Intuitive Specialty
I specialize in a teaching approach called Intuitive Eating, which is ideal for individuals who have struggled with chronic dieting, disordered eating, weight loss/gain cycles, and body image. Intuitive Eating, a nutrition philosophy developed by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch is a powerful tool that guides you in learning how to create a lifelong healthy relationship with food, the mind and body; where YOU ultimately become the expert of your own body. You will learn how to make peace with food and emotional eating, letting go of food restriction and food rules. The core premise of this approach is learning how to respond to your inner cues and inner wisdom.

  • 5+ package 1 hr session – $95 per session

I had been suffering with issues with food for a while. I would gain some weight, diet, lose the weight and then eventually gain it all back (sometimes plus more). I finally got sick of my unhealthy relationship with food and with my body and wanted to end this struggle once and for all. I happened to stumble upon Jenn’s blog and noticed her experience with intuitive eating which intrigued me. As luck would have it Jenn was offering a special on her coaching and I felt compelled to reach out to her. Speaking with Jenn was like a breath of fresh air. I realized I was not alone in this battle and it was helpful to finally express what I had been dealing with internally and receive non-judgmental and genuinely kind feedback. While working with Jenn I have gained some valuable tools to help with my journey to achieve a healthy lifestyle. These tools included learning the intuitive eating principals and figuring out what works for me, learning how to bring fun back to the kitchen and experiment with new and interesting foods, finding fun and enjoyment out of physical activity and exercise, developing a sense of confidence and achievement about the person I am today, dealing with my “inner gremlin” and working to bring my Circle of Life back into balance. In just a few short months working with Jenn I feel more secure and confident that a healthy lifestyle and attitude toward food and my body is achievable and maintainable.

He then studied  200 professional hours with world renowned Rolfer, Tom Myers, (Anatomy Trains). Mark was voted 2006 “Best of Boston for Massage Therapist” in the Improper Bostonian. His review read as:

You won’t see any advertisements for Mark F Dodd’s services. In fact, you won’t even be able to find him in the yellow pages. He’s always done just fine by word of mouth. Truth be told, we’re a little reluctant to share the secret. Dodd uses a combination of Swedish/Deep tissue massage techniques on a clientele that includes some of the hardest bodies in Boston. He’s under contract to Boston Ballet (located across the street) to work with the dancers, and a lot of theatre people passing through town manage to hear about him as well. Once you have paid a visit to this muscular ex- chef, you might discover new muscles you never knew you had. There are no oils, no lotions, no wraps. It is just you, the Tiger Balm/Bio-Tone combo and Dodd’s gifted hands.

In addition to working with Boston Ballet since 2001, Mark has worked on dancers and choreographers from many ballet companies including Royal, Kirov, San Francisco, New York City, American Ballet Theater, and Mark Morris.

In November 2010 Mark graduated from “The Aesthetic Institute of Boston” having completed 300+ hours of studies. He currently offers aesthetics, facials, and waxing using European organic products by Weleda International.

After my deep tissue massage with Mark Dodd, who I believe is THE best in Boston, I will never go back to any other type of massage. One massage therapy session with Mark cured almost all of my pain. I really appreciated him informing me why certain tight muscles of mine were causing the pain I was feeling. Walking out of my massage I felt like I was on cloud nine. By body had not felt so relaxed and aligned in years. He truly is a miracle worker!

Craig Faucher

Craig Faucher

Craig Faucher treats clients using a mixture of modalities studied and developed since he began his practice in early 2003. His bodywork education began at the Muscular Therapy Institute in Cambridge, Mass., where he learned the Benjamin System of Muscular Therapy – a combination of swedish, deep, and sports techniques aimed at evaluating and undoing dysfunctions in the body.

Through continuing education, working alongside doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors, Craig continued to enhance his ability in treating injury and promoting the body’s own ability to heal. This is achieved through specific Cross-Frictioning of damaged tissues, Myofasial Release, and de-activation of trigger points using Neuromuscular Therapy.

For many people, however, massage is a way to relieve everyday soreness and stress. His past experience also includes work in Boston spas and hotels.

Before studying massage therapy, Craig worked for seven years as a business journalist and editor, with a degree in Political Science from Ursinus College in eastern Pennsylvania. Craig continues to write news, features, and promotional copy on a freelance basis.

In 2004, Justine began her yoga journey and continued her study of the body-mind connection in California. She became a certified yoga teacher (RYT 200 hours) in 2007. She began integrating yoga and mindfulness into her elementary classrooms, middle school classrooms and P.E. classes; and offered instruction to her adult colleagues and school community.

Justine moved back to her native state of Massachusetts in late 2013 and received her facilitation certification from Learning from the Heart program (learning subject matter utilizing movement/yoga). She found Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) in 2016 and dove into her yoga therapy training. She completed over 600 hours of training and became a certified yoga therapist (600 hours) through PRYT in the winter of 2018. Since 2017, she has offered private individual Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy sessions and has facilitated trauma-informed group yoga classes, an 8-week stress management program, and silent meditative walks around Walden Pond.

Justine is excited to introduce yoga therapy to the Saldare community under her business name Trinity Yoga Therapy. She will facilitate a direct experience of present-centered awareness and assist each client in the practice of developing a deeper relationship to their body and listening to its messages.

What is yoga therapy?

The best way to describe yoga therapy - in particular, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy - is the following description from the school’s website:

“Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy is a holistic healing art. Using age-old yogic and modern therapeutic approaches to deepen awareness and presence, [it is] able to help others accept themselves more fully. Out of this acceptance they are more easily moved to embrace the opportunity for change, growth and enhanced well-being in body, mind, emotions and spirit.

A Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy one-on-one session […] consists of practitioner assisted yoga postures and a dialogue process that is client-centered, open-ended and non-directive. The client is facilitated through an experience of [themselves] in the present moment. And whatever happens in the present moment — physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually, finds richness in relationship to the bigger picture of how that client is being in the world in daily life — work, play, family and relationships.”

She is incredibly flexible and schedules appointments week to week with me around my hectic schedule. Her availability in her studio, at my home or outside ( weather permitting) keeps the training interesting. Our workouts vary based on my current needs and she always finds a way to make it fun. Kayla Mehr

Kayla Mehr

Kayla Mehr is Boston’s premier Pre and Postnatal Specialist!

Kayla grew up in an Italian family that used food as a way to come together and socialize. Although she had danced, strength trained, and ran cross country in school, she always struggled with her weight. It wasn’t until college that Kayla decided it was time to make changes in her life. After learning “smarter” ways of working out rather than “harder” and learning more about nutrition, Kayla lost 30 pounds and that is where her passion for health and fitness began.

After college, Kayla moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in Fitness. She began as a Personal Trainer at Equinox in West Hollywood, CA. While she was there, Kayla was hired to train Mickey Rourke during preparation for his role in The Wrestler, as well as other celebrities. She also gained numerous certifications, competed and won her first Bikini Competition and participated in a Triathlon. After a few years, Kayla took her experience and moved back East to be closer to her family.

She has been a Personal Trainer for over 10 years and pre and postnatal certified for 5. She’s worked with tons of expecting moms and when it came time for her to become pregnant she took a harder look at all the conflicting and confusing information out there about working out while pregnant. She dove in and did extensive research and even interviewed doctors, nutritionists and moms to fully understand how working out effects the mom and growing baby. Kayla has created a tried and true pre & postnatal training program that is safe, effective and enjoyable. Not only will she keep you strong throughout pregnancy and prepare you for the marathon of motherhood, but she will help you recover quickly and safely! She also has a huge community in Boston of pre/postnatal recourses and other moms who can help support you every step of the way.

Kayla gave birth to her first son in June 2018. Four and a half months postpartum from a C section, without any dieting, she is back to her pre-bably weight and although very tired and sleep deprived, she’s feeling stronger than she could imagine!
